Engagement Rate
Engagement rate is the percentage of your audience that likes, comments, saves or shares a given post. On Instagram in 2026 it is calculated as (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100. A healthy rate sits between 1% and 5% for accounts under 100k followers.

Engagement rate is the single most important account-health signal for both Instagram and TikTok algorithms. Both platforms use it to decide whether your content is worth showing to non-followers - the so-called 'discovery boost'.
There are three common formulas: engagement-per-post (interactions ÷ followers), engagement-per-reach (interactions ÷ accounts reached), and engagement-per-impression (interactions ÷ impressions). The first is the one most third-party tools and brand sponsors use, so it's the one to optimise.
When engagement rate falls outside the niche norm - too high or too low - algorithms flag the account for manual review. That's why pairing follower purchases with proportional likes is critical: it keeps the ratio inside the natural band.
