Impressions
Impressions are the total number of times your content was displayed on a screen, including repeat views by the same user. They are different from reach, which counts unique accounts. On Instagram, impressions per post divided by reach typically falls between 1.1× and 1.6×.

Impressions are a volume metric - they tell you how often your content appeared on screens, not how many distinct people saw it. A single user re-watching a Reel three times generates three impressions but only one reach.
The Instagram and TikTok algorithms use impressions as a denominator when computing engagement-per-impression rates. A high impression count with low engagement is interpreted as 'shown to the wrong audience' and triggers a distribution slowdown.
Impressions are most useful for measuring rewatch behaviour on Reels and TikToks. A high impressions-to-reach ratio means viewers are returning to the same clip - one of the strongest viral signals on either platform.
