    Watch Time

Watch time is the total cumulative seconds viewers have spent watching a video. It is the absolute volume metric behind completion rate. On TikTok, watch time is the second-most-important ranking factor after completion rate.

Watch time = average view duration × number of views. A 60-second clip with 10,000 views and 30-second average duration has 300,000 seconds of watch time. The platforms reward absolute volume on top of percentage completion.

This is why long-form Reels (60–90 seconds) can outperform short ones on volume metrics, even though their completion rate is lower. The total watch-time pool is bigger.

Optimising watch time means picking the shortest length that fully delivers your message. Padding to hit a length target almost always reduces both completion rate and total watch time.
